A study published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery found that ultrasound guidance improved the accuracy of knee injections from 56 percent with landmark techniques to 95 percent with ultrasound assistance (Fitzgerald et al., 2013). That improvement is not marginal. It represents a fundamental shift in the reliability of the procedure and, by extension, the reliability of the treatment outcomes patients experience.
When medications and regenerative biologics are delivered precisely to the intended target, they have the opportunity to do what they are designed to do. When they are not, therapeutic benefit is compromised regardless of how advanced the treatment itself may be.

A Meaningful Reduction in Complication Risk

Beyond accuracy, ultrasound guidance significantly improves the safety profile of joint injection procedures. Real-time imaging allows providers to identify and avoid critical structures, including nerves and blood vessels, that would not be visible with a landmark-based approach alone. In shoulder injections, for example, ultrasound helps target the glenohumeral joint while reducing the risk of inadvertent contact with the axillary nerve.
Research published in Pain Medicine found that ultrasound-guided lumbar facet joint injections reduced complication rates by up to 70 percent compared to blind injections (Kennedy et al., 2015). For any provider who takes patient safety seriously, that figure carries real weight.
